I approach collage almost as an art restorer, responding to what is there and adding lines and colors to bring out the pieces and make new connections. Color drives my selection process. This piece is inspired by a fabric quilt made by the artist Sonia Delaunay. As a collage artist, I am always inspired by quilts and quilt makers and love that we both speak the language of piecing things together and making connections between colors. Sonia Delaunay made a small quilt for her son and it opened up her eyes to the possibilities of geometric abstraction. We can see echos of this quilt in so much of her incredible body of work. I made my piece in painted and found paper and had fun thinking about her color and material choices and how I could translate those into paper.
