There is a brief moment at the beginning of each day where the blacks and grays of night just begin to give way to the true colors of day. In this painting I study that transition. The hostel has yet to become beige and the lighthouse and fences are soon to become white. Our brains tend to pre-determine the daylight colors during these moments and I found that exploring the transitional colors that represent the whites and beiges of daylight was actually quite difficult. What we see nonetheless is a white lighthouse and a beige hostel even though they are painted in blues and grays.
