In this mixed-media artwork, I have created a painterly version of the state of North Carolina inspired by symbols unique to the state. Here, the state appears in variegated brushstrokes of deep greens, a reference to the emerald, the state precious stone. Flowing in to meet the state are watercolor washes in rich shades of blue, a designated state color. Completing the piece is a background built in impasto layers of white paint that reveal hints of golden color below, a subtle nod to the colors of both the honeybee, the state insect, and the dogwood, the state flower.
